This song was
kind of a departure for me, as up to that point I really hadn't written
anything too abstract or -- pardon the expression -- mysterious. And I didn't set out to in this case. (Since then, I've written several things that would fall more into the abstract/mysterious category. In fact, I've written "Mysterious Ways" parts two and three, both of which appear on my "Love Conquers All" CD.) The verses of this first "Mysterious Ways" are all tied together, but refer to different incidents and events. For example, one is about a movie that I saw. The original verse, which started the whole thing, is Verse 4... it describes an actual recurring dream that I had. -Steve H. |
1. He came from out of nowhere / Bible
in his hand
And showed 'em all a one-way road
/ up to the Promised Land
Built a church out on the bayou /
a wonder to behold
He had Holy Ghost power / and he
saved a lot of souls
But they locked him in a prison cell
/ unto the end of his days
You know, the Lord works / in mysterious
ways
2. I was down in Rosarito / had some
trouble with the law
And friends, let me tell you / about
a vision that I saw
The King of Heavens and his angels
/ all in a flash of blue
Behind a burned-out hotel / on Rock
Of Ages Avenue
And they were dancin' in the moonlight
/ and singin' a song of praise
Ah, the Lord works / in mysterious
ways
3. I was driftin' down some backstreet
/ feelin' loveless and forlorn
Wonderin' if I'd made a big mistake
/ just bein' born
When some angel in the shadows /
took me by the arm
And said, "If you believe in miracles
/ I'm here to keep you warm"
Then she gave me a shot of love /
and I was amazed
You see, the Lord works / in mysterious
ways
4. There's a dream that I keep havin'
/ more real than I can say
I'm in some dusty border town / on
a big fiesta day
And the whole town has gathered /
to see the leader of the clan
Then I ask some señorita /
"Tell me, who's this holy man"?
And she points right at me / while
the marching band plays
Well, the Lord works / in mysterious
ways
5. I've played
every roadhouse / every honky-tonk and bar
And I've seen
the world, boys / from behind this old guitar
I must have done a thousand things
/ that people dream about
Some were all I hoped for / some
I could've done without
But if I had to sum it up / it'd
come down to this phrase
The Lord works / in mysterious ways
Oh, the Lord works / in mysterious
ways
"Mysterious
Ways" appears on the Steve Haggard CD,
Mysterious Ways.
